Learning Target:
I will identify and evaluate a speaker's use of the appeal to pathos.
OPENING ACTIVITY: Review of Yesterday with Writing
Yesterday we learned about how speakers make appeals to ethos. The key to an appeal to ethos is GAINING THE TRUST of the audience.
In the Lipitor ad the advertisers try to gain the trust of the audience in a few ways. First the ad mentions that the drug is FDA approved. The FDA is the Federal Drug Administration. The FDA will only approve the drug if it was safe enough for Americans. The trust of the FDA is conferred to the makers of Lipitor. Second the ad states that the ad was "extensively studied with over sixteen years of research." This makes us trust the product and the company because they seem to take the time to make the product right. |
Your turn. Explain in a paragraph how the Crest Ad makes an appeal to ethos. Please use the sentence starters below.
In the Crest ad the advertisers try to gain the trust of the audience. They mention __________________. This helps the audience trust the company because___________________________________. They also _________________. This helps the audience also trust the company because________________. |
PRACTICE:
Look at the eleven sentences on your handout and underline the words and/or phrases that make the sentence an appeal to pathos. Then identify the emotion that the words makes the audience feel. We will do the first one together.
1. "If we don’t move soon, we’re all going to die! Can’t you see how dangerous it would be to stay?"
This makes the audience feel FEAR because generally humans are afraid of danger and afraid of dying.
Continue with 2-11. Then move on to the advertisement section. Click on each link and identify the PORTION of the ad that appeals to PATHOS.
