OPENING ACTIVITY: Review of Yesterday with Writing
Yesterday we learned about how speakers make appeals to pathos. The key to an appeal to ethos is making the audience feel just the right EMOTION needed to move them to thought or action.
In the Lipitor ad the advertisers try to make the audience feel the emotion of fear. First the ad features a man named John who suffered from a heart attack. Generally most people are afraid of heart attacks because they could lead to surgery and/or death. John says that he "learned the hard way" about taking care of his cholesterol. The audience doesn't want the hard way. The hard way is a heart attack. The ad hopes that the fear will motivate the audience to talk to a doctor about Lipitor. They want to sell more Lipitor. |
